The 2018 Mid Winters hosted by the Atlanta Yacht Club March 17-18th was a tremendous success with 37 boats participating in two fleets, 26 in Gold, 11 in Blue from the US and Canada. The Gold Fleet was won by Drew Daugherty and Kristen Holder Y-2798 Ar, 2nd place went to Clint Hodges and Elle Spearman Y-2754 Ga and in 3rd place was Mark and Jill Barton Y-2688 Ar. Richard and Colin King Y-2794 from the BLSC placed 9th and Warren Flannery and Jason Houghton Y-2795 from BLSC placed 20th. In Blue fleet, first place went to Lucy Spearman and Isabelle Smith Y-2598 Ga., 2nd place went to Noah Benton and Ji-Soo Boiles Y-2692 Ga,and 3rd place went to Ray Marly and Jesse Barton Y-2606 Ar. Marla Betts from the SYC, with a borrowed US boat Y-2703 and crew Gregg Andrews placed 4rth. Well done Marla skippering in her first major regatta!
2nd Canadian Regatta of the 2018 season is the Vale at SYC, Sudbury, Ontario June 23-24th hosted by Fleet #17. Enjoy the thrills and spills on Lake Ramsey in the heart of the city with great food and friendship. For more information please contact Pierre Dignard (705) 523-0347 or email pdignard@isys.ca.
A new crew has arrived in Sudbury, ON at the SYC May 30th. Natalie Chaylt Y-1715 and Bob Robinson Y-2620 are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter Ruby Deleine Chaylt-Robinson. The question in the future will be who will she crew for, Mom or Dad or will she want her own Y-Flyer? Congratulations to both of you. The family will be attending the Internationals in Saratoga, NY.
Dave Casson from the LBBC Fleet #25, Collins Bay, Ontario dropped off the real Y-2498 mid May for repair, some confusion with boat numbers, and picked up Y-1463 from Ken Peterson at Beloeil, Quebec. The hull has been fully restored and ready to be painted and fitted for sailing. Great job Ken! Dave also returned June 6th with mast, boom and hardware salvage from Y-1707 that Jean-Patrick Masson in the Montreal area had kindly notified the CYFYRA of it's availability to a good home. Thank you JP!
Ken Peterson, our resident keelson boat builder and repair shop, has noticed on both recently restored Y-1463 and Y-2498 currently under restoration that these two boats have used a hollow pipe to protect the centreboard pin as per the CYFYRA plans. However, there is a problem generated by this design. Corrosion occurs first on the hollow pipe not protected within the centreboard trunk, generally galvanized steel. This eventually over time corrodes, and then corrodes the centreboard pin that could cause eventual failure in loosing the centreboard during sailing. Those with older models are recommended to review their set up, remove this hollow pipe arrangement if installed and check their centreboard pins for corrosion.
Warren Flannery Y-2795 from BLSC attended the Hawg Wild in Little Rock, Ar., with a borrowed US boat and GMSC crew Jack Muhollan Memorial weekend May 26-27th. He placed 7th out of 17 Y-Flyers attending the regatta. Well done Warren!
